Muscles Matter

Here’s the thing; some people, when they get injured, seem to take ages to heal while others who pull a muscle, suffer a sprain and rapidly recover. We went through a phase (and it is not over yet) of RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Over the last year or three, this unusual (we-need-to-do-something) practice has been challenged.

Over 3.5 million years of evolution, a process of mistakes and successes have honed the biology of recovery to a fairly fine product. I can’t imagine my concestor injuring themselves and then racing over to their local advancing glacier, chopping off a bit of ice, and sticking it on his/her/other ‘hammy’. It seems a bit far-fetched. However, we do have to concede that many of the medical innovations over the millennia have been useful.

This subject brings me to discuss the monolithic organisation, which through the use of ‘best practice’ dictates the number of weeks taken to recover.

Recovery from any injury is a complex process involving the three things we’ve talked about before – the genetics of that individual, the individual’s nutrition, and the individual’s environment.

By profiling the vulnerable and paying hearsay to individuality, the steamrolling corporation denies many their due rights of support. Offering in a seemingly benign chatty way, they lead you through a lopsided virtual hearing and finally to court. This is all done, knowing that the majority of people would not challenge the decision (and if they do contest, have only a 50% chance they will be awarded the outcome that they hope for).

Winners here are the corporation and lawyers; losers here are the injured and process-traumatised individuals.

Muscle matters.
